My Experiments

On this page I am showing you 2 fun experiments to do at home with solar power: A solar oven and a solar updraft tower.

A mini solar oven!

How does the oven work?

Well, the sun's light rays are collected by the foil flap and concentrated inside the box. The rays are transformed into thermal energy that slowly raises the temperature inside the box, causing the food to cook. ” Museum of Science and Industry

How to Build a Solar Oven

Materials

  • Pizza box {empty}

  • Aluminum foil

  • Plastic wrap

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • Ruler

  • Paper Plate

  • Food to cook

  •

Directions

1. Cut a flap in the top of the pizza box leaving a 2 cm border on the sides and front.   Wrap the bottom side of the flap and the interior of the pizza box with aluminum foil “ shiny side out “ and tape in place.

2. Cover the opening created by the flap with plastic wrap and tape into place.

3. Place food to be cooked on a paper plate inside the solar oven.   Prop the flap open with a ruler in position to reflect the sun into the oven.

4. Let the sun bake the food.   Depending on the time of day, heat and other variables, it may take up to an hour.

5. Be careful removing food {it will be hot!}

A solar updraft tower!

Materials:

-3 empty tin cans

-some sticky tape

-some paper

-a few books

Directions:

To make you're tower you're going to have to remove the bottom and top of the tin cans.

When you've done that tape them together.

Make  a wire arch out of an unbent paper clip. Tape it across the opening of the can with a thumbtack or straight pin taped on the top of the arch pointing up.

The tower is placed on a few books to allow the air to flow in from underneath.

Finally make a pinwheel made by cutting diagonally in from the corners of a 6 inch square sheet of paper, to within a quarter inch of the center, bending the every other point from the corners to the center, and taping them in place...

Once you've done your pinwheel try to balance it on top of your tower. And now you have finished the construction of your solar updraft tower! Leave it in a place in your house where it is sunny,  like near a window! And now wait a little while and you will be able to see the pinwheel spin without touching it!
